Things that make asthma worsen
Asthma
is linked to respiratory condition and it occurs while the air faces difficulty
in traveling from the nose and mouth to the airways and then it goes to the
lungs by bronchi and bronchioles. The airways are narrowed due to swelling or
due to accumulation of mucus and as a result breathing problem or symptoms like
shortness of breath, chest tightness, coughing and wheezing occur. It is
usually aggravated by allergic response or by any other forms of
hypersensitivity. If you leave this disease untreated, it will be deadly.
Asthma
is not a contagious disease. It is never transmitted from one person to another
like infections. It is only developed from a simple case to a complicated one.
For example, if you suffer from pneumonia or bronchitis, it can be developed
into asthma. Its main cause can be genetic or it can be increased by some
allergens like pollen from trees, smoke, dust, strong perfumes, cat’s hair or
items that collect dust at home. Sometimes, when you do a lot of exercise you
also experience asthma symptoms. Besides these, too much stress is another
cause of asthma attack.
Many
people do not know that they are experiencing asthma symptoms. Because their
body is more sensitive to specific allergens while others bodies are not
reactive at all. Mainly in this disease, the airways of the lungs get
complicated. Asthma can be allergic and non-allergic. Allergic
asthma is found in people who have allergies to pollen, dust, cats’ furs etc.
But the non-allergic asthma is happened due to triggers like cold, smoke,
exercises and strong fumes.
Most of
the time the symptoms get worse because of polluted air and allergies.
Sometimes climate change also makes the trouble worse. According to Alan
Goldsobel, an allergist in the Allergy and Asthma Associates of Northern
California, plants start their pollination earlier and it continues for a
longer period. The climate change influences the season timing and the seasons
come with more irregularities. Thus, the plants release the pollens earlier and
for long days with more amounts.
The
more number of asthma cases found nowadays may be due to air pollution from
vehicles, factories etc.
According to doctors, asthma is found in
different people due to different stresses. In some cases, it is increased due
to allergies and in others’ it may be due to cold and exercise. Here are some
triggers that increase the symptoms of asthma.
1.
Fruit:
When
the ragweed or pollen in the air makes you feel uncomfortable, you must have
‘oral allergy syndrome’. Some fruits also cause allergies like itching in mouth
and throat. It may be due to the pollen present in the fruit. Sometimes the
allergy is severe, so consult an allergist if you feel itching after taking a
fruit.
2.
Paint:
The
strong fumes are also cause allergy in some people. For example, when you paint
your house, it may cause allergy attack. So, try to paint your house with
‘green paint’ logos that means, it contains zero or low volatile organic
compounds (VOC) and different chemicals. Otherwise, paint your house with
certified products for asthma and allergy.
3. Air
fresheners:
Sometimes
when you spray air freshener in the room to decrease the bad odor from the
room, you start wheezing or sneezing. This happens due to the fragrance that
causes allergic reactions in you. These fragrances do not get rid the odor,
they only work like a mask from odors. Some mosquito killing smokes are also
unbearable for asthma patients. They feel like asthma attacks after inhaling
the smoke. So skip these fumes from your home and car.
4.
Spices:
Spices
like cinnamon, cardamom, garlic, and other spices are used in most of the
dishes to make them tasty. But it may cause allergic reactions in some people’s
body. Spices are also used in many cosmetics that are not mentioned on the
labels and so it is difficult to avoid. Though the spices have beneficial
properties for our body, still then they may be triggers of asthmatic
allergies.
5.
Smoke of woods:
If you
burn woods for cooking, the fires leave a lot of gas with irritating particles
in the air, which aggravates your asthma symptoms. According to American Lung
Association if you are an asthma patient, you should use gas burner instead of
wood fire.
6. Pain
relievers:
Asthma
patients with headache or back pain are prescribed to take non-steroidal
anti-inflammatory drugs or aspirin. However, 3-5 percent asthma people’s bodies
are sensitive to aspirin. After taking this medicine they experience breathing
difficulties leading to severe asthma attack. Acetaminophen can be beneficial
for them.
7.
Pollen of grass:
You may
have allergy to pollen of grass and of other trees. This allergy causes asthma
attacks. During the seasons when the pollen count is high, do not go outside
without covering your nose and mouth. At this time always keep your doors and
windows shut and put an air filtration system in your house to minimize your
asthma symptoms. You can also keep homemade dust filters at home to catch pollen,
dust and animal dangers before they are transmitted to air.
8. Furs
of the pet animals:
Some
peoples bodies are allergic to the furs of pet animals like cats, dogs etc.
This allergy can lead to severe attacks. In this case do not keep pet animals
at home otherwise take them to bath every day.
